Deseret Land & Livestock - June 21, 2008

Another report from DLL June 21, 08

We just finished our Trek with Crescent 24th Ward from Sandy, Utah. This was a small ward that we had this week. There were only about 40 people total. They came on Thursday and Trekked about 12 miles that first day, using 4 handcarts. I walked the first 6 miles with them. They started from the corrals and that first 6 miles was all cross country. We always walk with them on cross country routes, because is is so easy to be lost in this country. We stayed with them till about 10 pm that first night. One thing about DLL when the sun go's down it starts to cool off very quickly. I always carry my coat in the evening.

Sister Hawk and I always return to the trailer at night, it freezes every night. We got up at 6 am Friday morning and headed to McKay Hollow where the Trek was camped. All said how cold they had been that night. They Trekked another 6 plus miles and made camp. The youth played games in the afternoon and into the evening. Last night they held a testimony meeting. We stayed in the camp till about 10:30, got back to the trailer about 11 pm. Short night, up at 6 am, headed out at 7:30 to the 4 way at McKay Ridge, and the camp. I had to leave Sister Hawk with the Trek to do a route review with Jordan 7th Ward. I finished showing them there route in record time of one hour 45 minutes. One of the guys from that ward is the brother of Sister Niles of Delta 7th Ward, our Home Ward.

Sister Hawk walked with the Trek while I did the review. We finished getting them out the gate early this afternoon. we are both tired tonight, but all is well. We will go to Church in Evanston in the morning. Monday we start getting ready again for Farmington South Stake. This will be a larger group of 480 souls. They are coming on Wednesday morning so we will be busy all week.

We received 24 new wheels, so will soon start rebuilding handcarts.

We always have things to do. We listen to the Cubs and 50's music on the XM radio, that our only entertainment. I am making leather bags to carry our scriptures. God Bless All

Deseret Land & Livestock - June 15, 2008

Hello from Deseret Land & Livestock -Trek headquarters, Another chapter: Sister Hawk and I were not assigned a Trek this week, but we spent our time help the other missionaries. We had around 800 trekkers this week, the weather was wonderful. Yesterday it was 72 degrees. The wind blew as always but not as hard. The flowers are coming out and there are many. One of the groups didn't follow our rules very well, but we always have the last word about the deposit and booking them in future years.

When one group got here the Stake President told Elder Platt that he didn't think his Stake would ever do trek again, because it was lots of work for just three or four days, as they were leaving the Stake President again told Elder Platt, he would do all in his power to see that his Stake would return, the spirit is so strong here you can almost see it. God blesses all who come here each week, I see it in the faces of the Trekkers every where I look. This is such a good place to be, at this time in our life.

Our health is good and even at this high altitude we are able to do all that is asked of us. During the time the Treks are here we work many hours, but the rewards are great. I have learned to do some leather work and I have made Sister Hawk a scripture bag, she likes it even if it isn't prefect.

God lives, Jesus is the Christ.

God bless all who read this.

First Trek - June 7, 2008

Just another quick note to let everyone know we are doing good. We just completed our first Trek with the South Jordan Parkway Ward. This trek was to start at 9:30 AM on Thursday, but it rained all night Wednesday night and was cool and cloudy on Thursday morning. We had them come at 3 PM and by then the weather was clearing some. They hiked about 6 miles and camped at a place we call Dairy Bowl. The weather was still clear, so we went to bed that night thinking all was well. The next morning it was still cloudy and cool. South Jordan Parkway had their Women's pull in the morning, Sister Hawk went with them (5 miles) I scouted the way ahead to make sure we could get them to where they wanted to go. It ended up that they went about 16 miles that day. The evening was better so again we went to bed thinking all was well. We got up at 6 AM like always and Sister Horrocks called and said it was snowing and they couldn't make it out with the carts. Sister Hawk and I went to Crane Hollow and found it snowing hard. The Bishop decided after they finished breakfast, they would have a short testimony meeting with the youth. As we started the meeting the sun came out and it stopped snowing. After a short time about 50 seagulls, came over and my heart about jumped out. I was like an omen. I told them about how at sea when we would see gulls we would know we were getting close to land. We would see gulls 50 or a 100 miles off shore. The weather was bad all three days but all was well, those kids were great and they learned a little about how hard it was to pull a handcart 1600 miles. They only went a fraction of that but they understand. Sister Hawk and I understood also how much good we are doing on this Mission at Deseret Land & Livestock. What a blessing this is for us. There were 4 different treks here about 800 hundred people. All were well except for the rain and snow. We are well and happy, God blesses us daily.
