Deseret Land & Livestock Trek Headquarters - May 30, 2008

Here is another installment from Trek Headquarters. We have all the Handcarts out of the storage and we washed them today. Each cart has a 20 foot rope, the Sisters got all the ropes ready while the Elder loaded 12 old carts that we sold to a Stake in Illinois. The people drove all the way from Chicago.

The past two days have been hard work, moving the port a johns and water wagons. The handcarts were all in good repair so we didn't need to spend much time on them. We have four Treks next week. Sister Hawk and I will have one starting on Thursday morning. When the Treks are here we will work 10 to 12 hours a day. This mission is not a set around thing, we work most of the time.

The Lord is blessing us and I am glad to be here. The grass is greening up and the Antelope are having there young. We saw one today with twins. Sister Hawk listens to the Cubs when ever possible. If they play at night we listen. Not much here to do at night. No TV and I don't miss it at all. I think everyone spends more time in front of the TV than required.

A few days ago we lost a drive line in one of the trucks, I enclosed a couple of pictures.

Deseret Land & Livestock Update - May 24, 2008

Well this is just another note to let you all know we are OK. We had a big storm past. We had rain & snow and everything in between.

We went for a hike this morning and saw birds and antelope, we are still learning the trail system up here. All the roads are muddy and we don't want to drive because of the ruts we leave. Sister Hawk and the other sisters went into town for supplies, but I stayed on the ranch.

There is a large band of sheep moving though to the high country. The hoarder came in last night to get a post, it seems his horse gets away so he staked him out with a metal post. It looks like a couple of thousand head of sheep. Cowboys are also moving cattle though and the cattle will be staying in the corrals here tonight. This is a wonderful place for me to serve a mission. Wildlife every place you look, I really love this wide open country. It still freezes about every night. Raining as I write this, flowers will soon be coming as well as other plant life. It has greened up, and the only thing we need is a little bit of sun.

I enclose a few pictures

Pictures - May 18, 2008

We took the picture of us in Pioneer wear just before we went on the Route Review with South Jordan Parkway Ward on Saturday morning. Things here are good. We are starting to figure things out. The weather has been good, but this next week things will be cooling off. There are about 8000 head of cattle on this ranch. We see antelope everyday. I have also seen deer, eagles and badgers. The woodpeckers have pecked many holes in some of the buildings. There are not many distractions up here, no TV. We go to bed early and rise early each day. There are few trees up here, but I still love it.

All is well

Personal Day - May 14, 2008

We are at Donna's house today. We are taking a little break from DLL today. It's about 75 miles down here. Caroll got a new XM radio boom box so she can listen to the Cubs in the evenings. I spent the Bush money on a new camera. I got a Nikon D-40 with two lens. I wanted one when I was in Japan 48 years ago, just got it now. It is SLR so I can make many pictures. Thing at Deseret Land & Livestock are going good. We are learning the places to take the Treks. I think these kids will learn some things about how hard it was to come to Utah in 1856. These Treks are 25 miles with Handcarts. The first kids will start coming about June 4th. There are three other couples with us. The elevation is right at 7000 ft, so it gets cool at night. Only two seasons up there winter/ rodeo. It reminds me of San Luis Valley. Winter & Stampede ( Rodeo) . We are good and believe it or not we are having fun. I left several things at home but o'well I'll live. I want to enclose some pictures.

Windy Wyoming or In This Case Utah - May 11, 2008

We are setting in the trailer listening to the wind blow. A storm is coming so the wind is blowing about 35 MPH. We went to church in Evanston 6th Ward. The people were very nice and friendly. After church we returned to the ranch and had lunch with the other three couples. The temperature today is 66 degrees. The storm will be bring 45 degrees in the morning. It freezes here every night but we keep our water tank on the trailer full so we just change to it. This is no sissy mission, we work 10 hours each day. Sister Hawk and I go to bed between 9 AND 10 pm and are always tired and ready for sleep. We arise at 5:30 or 6:00 and get ready for the days activity. We are learning the Trek route and just figuring out how to get around. WE are call people who have booked treks for 2009 and we will start calling 2010, 2011 and 2012 in the next few weeks. WE start moving handcarts, water wagons and port a potty's this week. WE will also be repairing handcarts and building new ones. As I said we are working hard but enjoying the blessing of a Trek Mission.
God bless you all

Arrived at Desert Land and Livestock - May 6, 2008

We got to the ranch about noon, had to come on some muddy roads. It is about 3 miles from the depot to the freeway. We get off on exit 191. Got things set up around 4:30. I had to freeze protect the water line because it freeze at night. There are no trees that I have seen so far. We start at 8 AM in the morning with a meeting in the depot. The sisters will clean the depot in the morning, The Elders will be getting the Handcart from the barn. We will make sure everything is in working order. There is still some snow around as you can see from the pictures.

Each set of missionaries will have a truck. We will be getting them in a couple of days. We will need to learn all the trek routes so we can show the various groups. Sister Hawk and I will have our first route review on May 17, so we need to get things down. I have seen many Antelope day. We had to go to Evanston this evening to get a few things. On the way out and then again coming back we saw Antelope. This is rolling hill country. I think about seeing Indians on every hill. You know Louis L'Amour. I love this country. We did not have TV, the satellite radio works but only in the truck. Our new radio is not as powerful as the old one and we can't listen to the cubs in the trailer. I better go for to night, it looks like we will go to bed at dark and get up with the sun.

Sister Hawk and I are in charge of 6 treks and 3 rentals so far. We still can't get to the ranch, we hope we can make it next week, maybe Tuesday. We are learning many new things and having fun. Today we got our GPS/ Radio. It is nice and I want one for myself. These Treks can and do change peoples lives. We are so glad to be here at this time. Our water froze this morning but all is well now. You all know my saying " there is no such thing as to much fun" we are having fun but working lots also.

Update - April 27, 2008

We are in Provo, because we can't get up to the ranch due to snow on the roads. We are camping in East Bay RV Park in Springville. Two of the other couples are here also. Elder & Sister Sherwood are from Gilbert Arizona, Elder & Sister Platt and from Payson Arizona, Elder and Sister Young live in Provo so they are staying at home. We will be going to church with the other three couples this morning in Provo, in the Young's ward. On Monday we will be having training at the ward house where Elder & Sister Young attend church. It seems there are many things we will need to know before the trekker's start to arrive.

The ranch has 110 Handcart, some will need repairs so that will happen after we get to DLL. Caroll and I are just happy to be here. I know we will have many wonderful times ahead.

May God Bless You All
Thank You your Prayers
